Survey: Gardens, parking spaces and broadband speed – the 2020 property deal-breakers
Property facilities are more important than location when looking for the ideal home, the 2020 property deal-breakers in new research from Aviva reveals.
The findings come from Aviva’s latest ‘How We Live’ study, a survey of 6,000 UK residents.
It finds, when looking for a new home, four of the top five “must-haves” relate to properties themselves, rather than where they are situated.
A garden is the most popular deal-breaker, viewed as essential by 43% of would-be homebuyers, followed by a parking space – a necessity for 29%. Good broadband speed is crucial to 22% of property purchasers – a larger proportion than those looking for a low crime rate (20%).

Gareth Hemming, MD Personal Lines, Aviva, says:
“We can see clearly how people’s priorities are changing with regard to what they want from a home. A garden is by far the biggest deal-breaker and broadband speed is hugely important – something which would not have been a consideration for past generations.
“It’s also interesting that six per cent of homebuyers include a home office in their must-have list and three per cent would be looking for multiple rooms to enable home-working. This is possibly as a result of the events of 2020 and we may well see more people using their homes as their workplace in the future.
“If people are looking to move house or make changes to how they use their property – for example, if they wish to set up a business from home – it’s a good idea to speak to their insurer, to make sure they have the right cover in place.”
