Society of Licensed Conveyancers Welcomes Government Consultations on Home Buying Reform and Material Information Disclosure
The Society of Licensed Conveyancers (SLC) welcomes the launch of two important consultations by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in the home buying and selling process.
The first consultation, Material Information in Property Listings, proposes clearer guidance on the essential details that must be disclosed upfront in property listings. The second, Home Buying and Selling Reform, explores ways to streamline transactions, reduce fall-through rates, and enhance consumer confidence.
Simon Law, Chairperson at SLC, commented:
“These consultations represent a timely opportunity to address long-standing challenges in the property market. Licensed Conveyancers are committed to delivering a smooth and secure transaction process, and we support efforts to improve transparency and reduce delays for consumers.”
However, the SLC also urges caution to ensure that any reforms do not result in mission creep—the gradual expansion of responsibilities beyond the core legal functions of conveyancers.
“It is vital that the role of the conveyancer remains focused on legal due diligence and the protection of clients’ interests,” Simon added. “We must avoid placing additional administrative burdens on conveyancers that dilute their core responsibilities or create inefficiencies in the process.”
The SLC welcomes proposals to:
- Standardise “material information” to improve clarity for buyers.
- Introduce mechanisms to reduce transaction failures.
- Improve the quality and accessibility of property information at the point of listing.
- Enhance professional standards through qualifications and a new Code of Practice.
The Society will be submitting a formal response to both consultations, reflecting the views of its members and advocating for reforms that are practical, proportionate, and respectful of professional boundaries.
The consultations are open until 29 December 2025, and responses can be submitted via the GOV.UK website and Material Information in Property Listings
