CIH responds to Homes England Statistics 2019/2020
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has commented on the Homes England Statistics for 2019/2020 on the supply of homes they provide, excluding London, except for delivery of programmes managed by Homes England on behalf of the Greater London Authority.
These are some of the key statistics from the release:
- 17,015 affordable homes started were for Affordable Rent, a reduction of 4 per cent on the 17,772 started in 2018-19
- 11,656 were for Intermediate Affordable Housing schemes, including Shared Ownership and Rent to Buy (increase of 1 per cent on the 11,540 started in 2018-19)
- 2,399 were for Social Rent, an increase of 91 per cent on the 1,255 started in 2018-19
- 4,739 affordable homes started with tenure to be confirmed – tenure for these units will not be known until completion and they will be restated under their appropriate tenure in future releases.
In reviewing the statistics, CIH chief executive Gavin Smart said:
“It’s encouraging that Homes England are reporting increases in both starts on site and completions in 2019/20. While It is disappointing to see a reduction in overall starts for affordable rent, it’s good to see the 91% increase in social housing starts. However, it is important to note that this has increased from a very low base and is nowhere near the 90,000 social homes per year necessary to begin to address our national housing crisis.
“We really need to see housing – and homes – at the heart of government’s plans for economic recovery. The autumn Spending Review will provide an early opportunity for government to invest in new homes, including the 90,000 homes at social rents needed each year to solve our acute housing crisis.”
