Check the premium charged on homes near local schools

Buyers face an average premium of over £40,000 to live near a top state secondary schools, climbing as high as £275,000 in the most expensive location.

The research from online agency Yopa shows that the average property across the postcode districts home to a top 50 state secondary commands a price tag of £415,791.

That’s £40,574 more than the average of £375,217 across the wider local authorities in which these schools are located, equating to a house price premium of 9.8%.

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield tops the table, with homes across the B74 postcode district commanding an average price of £509,964. 

That’s £275,814, or 54.1%, more than the Birmingham average of £234,150.

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls also ranks highly, with the average home across the B73 postcode district costing £402,432, a premium of £168,282, or 41.8%, compared to the wider Birmingham average.

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham ranks third. Homes within the HP6 postcode district average £796,141, some £305,633, or 38.4%, more than the Buckinghamshire average of £490,508.

The Henrietta Barnett School in London follows, with the average property across NW11 commanding a 37% premium versus Barnet, equivalent to an additional £354,288.
