The podcast explores the financial realities facing law firms in 2026, drawing on insights from the Crowe Benchmarking 2025 report, and offers practical guidance on building more resilient practices.

In episode 30, Amy Bruce, marketing director at Osprey Approach, is joined by Mark Adderley, Director at Crowe UK and council member of the ILFM. Mark shares insights into the widening performance gap across the sector, the pressures impacting profitability, and the strategic and cultural shifts firms need to remain competitive.

Mark highlights that firms are facing pressure on both income and costs, with regional firms particularly affected by price-sensitive markets. “We are price sensitive. We will shop around,” he explains.

He also cautions against simply increasing workload to improve profitability. “Don’t overcomplicate what you’re doing… strip out any waste,” Mark advises, emphasising the importance of accurate time recording, prompt billing, and strong financial discipline.

The discussion also considers the behaviours of high-performing firms, with Mark stressing the need for strong governance, clear management structures, and cultural openness. Firms that invest in specialist roles and empower non-fee earners to lead operational areas are better positioned for sustainable growth. As he explains: “They let fee earners do fee earning and let business people run the business.”
